Is Travelling Safe During Pregnancy?

Question: Hi, My wife 25 weeks pregnant.During 18 weeks, placenta with grade 1 maturity was diagnosed thru anamoly scan. But the doctor said it is normal and should walk atleast 30 mins daily and can climb stairs and can also travel. But suddenly, two days before my wife had a heavy feeling in stomach and doctor asked us to get her admitted and doctor gave betansol steroid. and she askd her to take complete bed rest for few weeks. She wants to travel to her home town asap which is 24 hrs from bangalore.Is it advisable to travel??and are there any side effects of dat steroid?? My baby has got all its organs at 18 weeks itself and my wife has no diabetics,thyroaid, bp is normal. Please suggest as we are scared of admitting in hospital nd all.

Brief Answer: NEED COMPLETE BED REST. NO TRAVELLING ALLOWED. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments: 1) BETNESOL (contains Betamethasone- steroid) is usually given to promote fetal lung maturity in case of high risk preterm delivery or threatened preterm labor to avoid fetal distress. Two doses are given around 28 weeks and again around 34 weeks if not delivered by then. Steroid given at this stage, will be beneficial for growing fetus and there will be NO side effects from it. 2) At this stage, she needs COMPLETE BED REST up to 28 weeks (age of fetal viability) at least or there after to avoid suspected preterm delivery. Otherwise, there is high risk of fetal death if delivery is conducted prior to 28 weeks by any means. In this case, I suggest her TO AVOID LONG DURATION TRAVELING which can enhance preterm delivery (greater risk for baby). Do periodic check up and follow her doctor's advice. In emergency case, you must contact with local hospital and get admitted her (if required) for proper management. Hope, I have answered your query.
