Question: My wife, a mother of two children (10 Yrs and 7 Yrs) and is now carrying (6 months now) and is also undergoing orthodontic treatement since 9 months. She got her lower jaw braces fixed 5 days ago. Orthodontic doctor advised her to take crocin if required as a pain killer. Please let me know the impacts of that. As she is prone to migrane, she feels headaches as well at times.. Kindly advise.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

Crocin is safe during pregnancy and your wife can take it. Moreover most of the medicines are not taken during the first trimester during which organogenesis occurs. Your wife is completing the second trimester. So there is nothing to worry.

For migraine headache, your wife can try these lifestyle modifications:

1)     Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day.

2)     Exercise regularly (daily if possible) and limit stress through regular exercise and relaxation techniques.

3)     Avoid bright or flashing lights and wear sunglasses if sunlight is a trigger.

4)     Identify and avoid foods that trigger headaches by keeping a headache and food diary and limit caffeine consumption to less than two caffeine-containing beverages a day.

5)     She can also take acetaminophen or Crocin for the headaches.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

To increase fetal weight, fresh fruits, vegetables, protein, whole grains and healthy carbohydrates are all good food choices for you and your baby. Your wife needs to take 300 additional calories a day. She should try to eat three of four sold meals in a day. Avoid fatty, fried foods and foods high in cholesterol or preservatives. Concentrate on protein XXXXXXX diet like milk, cheese, yoghurt, curd, meat products and eggs (hard boiled).

She should refrain from using alcohol, caffeine, tobacco and drugs and take your prenatal vitamins at regular intervals. Milk is an excellent source of calcium and your wife should take atleast 2 glasses of milk everyday.

In pregnancy, an additional 3 mg/day of elemental iron must be absorbed from dietary sources. She can have iron XXXXXXX foods like liver, lean red meats, beans like kidney, lima, navy, black, pinto, soy beans, and lentils, iron fortified whole grains, XXXXXXX vegetables like spinach, tofu, broccoli, swiss chard, asparagus, parsley, chicken, nuts, egg yolk and dry fruits.

She should also have iron supplements along with these foods. The iron preparation should contain between 30-100 mg elemental iron. Avoid enteric-coated or prolonged-release preparations.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
