Spotting, Continuous Bleeding, Clots, Normal PAP Smear. Normal Menopause?
Question: hi, i am 51 years old and have had normal periods until now. this month i spotted for 3 days, then a week later got my period. it's been 12 days and i am still bleeding, some days heavy other day almost nothing at all. today, i noticed clots. is this normal for the beginning of menopause. i have always had normal pap smears. can i do something to stop this or at least slow it down. should i be concerned? normaj717
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The irregular and heavy bleeding that you are having can be due to uterine fibroids, polyps or hormonal disturbances commonly seen in perimenopausal age group. For diagnosis, you need to have an ultrasound scan of your lower abdomen.
To decrease the bleeding you need to have progesteone pills along with hemostatic agents like ethamsylate or tranexaemic acid after consulting with your gynaecologist.
Meanwhile start taking iron supplements to combat excessive blood loss from your body.
Checking serum FSH levels will give you an idea regarding time to menopause.
I hope my answer and recommendations are adequate and helpful. Waiting for your further follow up queries if any.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
