Question: Hi, I just walked into a closed door in the dark (open 5 mins before so very unexpected!) & hit my left eye socket right on the brow bone. It's very painful & I am holding a small ice pack on it but its swelling up. What's the best treatment & is there arise I have a hairline fracture or will I get a black eye? I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
It will be painful for a few days and a bruise or black eye is likely to come up. But dont worry. The bones of the eye socket are quite hard to get a fracture. And even if there is a hairline fracture, it will heal on its own. An xray can be done for confirmation. But I believe you wont be needing all these.
The main concern is rather your vision and movement of eyeball. If you have any sort of problem with your vision or painful and restricted movement, rush to ER and get checked.
If not, conservative treatment should go on.
Apply ice 5-6 times a day.
Take painkiller pills like ibuprofen, diclofenac etc for 4-5 days, I believe you wont need them after that.
Take trypsin-chymotrypsin +/- bromelain tablets for 5 days. These alongwith ice will take care of the swelling and inflammation.
If bruise appears, it is better to take antibiotics for 5 days to avoid chances of infection.
Avoid massaging or application of any creams initially for bruise.

The headache may be due to the impact. It will be relieved gradually. Dont worry.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.
