Posted on Sat, 10 Jan 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with diverticulitis in December of 2013. I had a colonoscopy in January of this year that confirmed the diagnosis. I had a flare up in October, which I took the prescribed medications.
Since the flare up, I have had almost consist stomach issues, bloated, burning / tingling feeling which moves around my stomach. I also experience spasm, loud noise, which start on my lower left side. I can also hear and feel liquid moving around. My primary doctor game me dexilant, which is not working. Any thoughts on what going on with my stomach, based on what I described?

I also have cramping.
Also had a CT scan earlier this year, which showed no additional issues.
My stomach was clear of any masses or tumors, my whole body was clear, except for where the diverticulitis was located

Brief Answer:
Have you been prescribed any antibiotics?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

You are reporting to have diverticulitis. I need to know if you have been prescribed antibiotics.

Usually, the use of antibiotics is associated with alterations of intestinal flora (dysbacteriosis) producing the symptoms you have mentioned. I advise to culture the stool and start taking probiotics.

Hope it was of help!

Brief Answer:
Metronidazole&Naproxen-possible causes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing the requested data.

Metronidazole you used for flare-ups is an antibiotic, that might have altered intestinal flora.

Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory medication that might reduce the stomach pH causing hyperaciditiy. Hyperacidity itself might increase frequency of bowel movements.

So, to my opinion, at this point, you should continue with:
- probiotics to normalize intestinal flora
- stop naproxen or other anti-inflammatory drugs
- take PPIs to optimize stomach pH
- take antacids each time you eat

Hope it was of help!
