Suggest Remedy For Injury On Ankle Causing Walking Difficulty And Leg Pain

Question: I rolled my left ankle last night and it hurt pretty bad right away and I heard a pop or something. I was just getting to an event so I gave it a few minutes and then walked on it for about 45 minutes. I had to limp and put as little pressure on the foot as possible but it didn't hurt to the extent that I could use it. I sat down for about an hour and only felt pain when I moved my foot. However, when I tried to get up the pain was way worse than it was before and I could put almost no weight on it. The pain is on the outside and top of my foot. I iced it when I got home and used an ace bandage when I got home and tried to keep it elevated while I slept. Today I have stayed off it all day other than to use the bathroom and I still can't out much weight on it but I am able to limp around for short periods of time. It's barely swollen and there is no bruising but the pain is intense when I try to walk or move my foot. It's much worse when I try to point my foot compared to when I flex it. I'm just wondering if I need to go to a doctor or if icing and compression is enough? I work all week but I don't spend much. time on my feet during the day. if I don't want to but I do take the bus most days so my boyfriend doesn't have to pick me up. Do you think. I should avoid walking on it if I can help it or will it be alright if I can stand the pain?

Brief Answer:
Given your description, it would be wise to have it examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I'm sorry you are injured. Given the severity of your symptoms, I think it is a good idea to go in to be seen for an exam of the ankle, and ankle X-ray.

I do not think you should walk on that foot until it is examined.

In addition to elevation and ice, and a compression bandage or ankle immobilizer, if you are able to take NSAIDs, you can add that in. Contraindications to taking NSAIDs are a history of stomach problems, bleeding problems, or kidney deficiencies. You can take ibuprofen 600mg, 3x/day with food or after eating.

Walking on it now, if there there is a significant tear, can cause further damage and delay healing.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
