Question: I was moving my bowels the other day and felt a twinge in a muscle about two inched above my waist on my right lateral side and it aches when I cough sneeze laugh or move my bowels. I also noticed when I got out of the shower this morning there were about 4 or 5 small black and blue marks in the area. What should I be doing to have it get better?

Brief Answer:
Muscle pull or sprain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
From the history you have given, it looks like a case of muscle pull or sprain. The black and blue marks that you have seen are probably bruises that have resulted from the sprain.
Do not worry. I would suggest the following-

Avoiding twisting movements of waist and heavy weight lifting.
Ice compression locally.
Painkillers like aceclofenac or ibuprofen with thiocolchicoside combination.
Antacids to rule out stomach issues that might be caused by painkillers.
Deep breathing exercises.
Local application of painkiller gels replacing oral painkillers if pain is less.

It should get better in a few days.
You can consult the above with your treating or family doctor and get them prescribed.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Coughing, sneezing or straining during bowel movements will cause more pain. It might not aggravate your healing but yes, the pain will be more.
The way out is to reduce chances of coughing sneezing etc.
You are having cough and running nose I believe.
Cough syrups which are available over the counter will reduce your cough and fexofenadine or levocetrizine will be able to take care of sneezing by reducing allergy. If you have constipation, take food regularly comprising more of dietary fibers and enough water. Also, lactulose solution before bed will help you with your bowels without straining.

Hope this helps.
Regards.
