Suggest Remedy For Severe Throat Pain And Post Nasal Drip
Question: I was yelling loudly for hours last night at a concert, woke up this morning and my throat was scratchy and it was painful to swallow. After eating hot oatmeal it entirely went away. Then after a 4 hour nap it was back again. After drinking hot tea it immediately went away a second time. My question is, could this be a strictly injury related sore throat being irritated by post nasal drip (I have chronic rhinitis) or is it more indicative of a viral / bacterial infection. Or coukd this be Acute HIV infection? I had unprotected insertive vaginal intercourse two weeks ago. I have no fever or other symptoms.

Explaining the situation
Detailed Answer:
hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of a injury to the throat.
Now when this happens any localised organism can infect the raw traumatic area.
This van be anything bacteria or virus.
Ideally, for HIV, the spread would take time. So while you might have been infected HIV itself will not cause the soar throat. It makes it easier for other organism to infect.
I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to explain the situation. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

Thank you Dr. Mittal your information has been very helpful. Can any other doctors confirm this? I always appreciate a second opinion .
Brief Answer:
Unlikely on the same query

Hi,
I am afraid the system allows one doctor per query. I hope you understand the situation.

Ok thank you Dr. Mittal. I do have one final question for you. I have read many articles from the CDC on HIV transmission rates and am still very concerned. The woman i had unprotected vaginal intercourse with is very sexually active. She claims to not have HIV but i am not sure i can trust her and not enough time has passed for me to get a reliable antigen test. The intercourse was very short and i did not have any open sores or cuts. How likely is it(estimated) that I caught the disease? This is causing me a great deal of stress and anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
If the lady is right there is no chance.
However, if she is indeed a chance, then academically speaking a risk of 0.1% to 5 % is there. The percentage of course is different and varies with the source of information. Transmission to males is usually less. Transmission to the females is more common.
I think if you are indeed worried you should ask a local practitioner for a prescription for post exposure prophylaxis - better safe than sorry.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal
