Question: My wife is 17 weeks pregnent with high thyroid begin detected just before pregnance. From then she is taking 1 pill for throid. Since out last visit to our Gynac on 26 Sep 14 - Her weight was 71.5 kgs, on 17 Oct it was 71.8 kgs and on 7 Nov Nov it is 75.2 kgs. In last three weeks she gained liked 3.4 kgs all of sudden and her symtoms like pain in back, shoulder and hand has started again (which she use to have before taking throid tablets).

My Gynec suggested to control her weight XXXXXXX 0.5 kgs per week and asked for a TSH and CBC test. Is the sudden rise could be because of thyroid, and is there any precaution to take to control it. Further she told if she gains weight so much there a chances they she and the baby may get diabities..What can we do to control the weight, She ishaving normal home cooked food.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The sudden increase in weight at 17 weeks is worrisome. If the weight continues to increase on this rate then it can cause a metabolic imbalance causing gestational diabetes. The increase in weight is not likely to be due to thyroid levels fluctuation. It is best to get her TSH levels evaluated to confirm this.
To control her weight gain she should follow a low carbohydrate diet rich in proteins and calcium to have a healthy baby.
Restrict her salt and sugar intake. Salt should be less than 4-5 grams per day. A diet that includes fruits, vegetables, fiber-containing foods, and low-fat milk is advised.
Take six small meals instead of three big meals which are equally time spaced.
Foods to be avoided: Glucose, sugars, honey, jaggery, all sweets, chocolates, ice creams and candies.
Foods to be restricted: Vegetables like Potatoes, yam, arbi, sweet potatoes; Fruits like XXXXXXX bananas, sapota, seethaphal, and avocado .Alcoholic beverages, carbonated beverages ,fried foods, Dry fruits and nuts, salad dressings like mayonnaise, cream ,etc, cakes and pastries, Tender coconut water, Refined flours like maida .Papad, Pickle, soda bicarbonate, MSG, sauces, Ketchup’s. Non-veg: Red meats, organ meats (liver, kidney), shell fish like prawns, crabs, lobster and egg yolk.
Foods to be used freely: Green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber. Radish, carrot, homemade soups. Tea, Coffee- not more than one cup per day without sugar, and skimmed milk, buttermilk. Whole wheat flour, Ragi, Corn flakes, Wheat flakes. Use Low sodium salt only.
An advice from a dietitian will be helpful.

Hello Dr.

My Wife was having Glycomet 850 for 4.5 months (may be because of PCOS) and during her last visit to Dr, she complained about fainting during the day, so her glycomete was discontinued.

After her last visit and 3 weeks after , today she visited and her weight was increased by 3.4 kgs. Can this be because glycomete 859 was stopped ??

Brief Answer:
Can be due to stopping Glycomet.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Discontinuation of glycomet can cause a sudden rise in her weight. But the hypoglycemic attacks- fainting attacks that she was having are more dangerous than weight gain. It is now best to maintain a healthy diet to have a normal weight gain during the pregnancy.
Hope my answer is helpful.
