Suggest Treatment For An Advanced Liver Cancer
It looks like my father has advanced liver cancer. That has been confirmed, though we have not determined if it's primary or metasticized, though there is concern about the kidneys as well.
We have an appointment with an oncologist next Monday, Nov. 28 and working on getting into Memorial XXXXXXX Kettering. I'm getting anxious. Should I be worried about time?
What might our treatment options be?
He is still eating, though not gaining back lost weight.
His vitals have been acceptable.
Thanks for you time

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
I am sorry about this diagnosis, this is serious disease. You probably know already that if there is no possibility of liver resection or transplantation, then there is no cure. The only therapy is so called palliative treatment which may prolong life for some short period and relieve some symptoms such as pain and weight loss. This treatment include chemotherapy, but considering his age and disease stage,I am not convinced if this would be beneficial for him and may have some side effects. Of,course, oncologist should determine if chemotherapy is possible depending on tumor size and type and his general condition but generally prognosis is poor even with chemo and averagely around6 months.Wish you good health. Feel free to ask. Regards.
