Question: Hi Dr. Rynne. My mom is 76 years old. She has had shingles. Now she has had chills & low fever for the past week along with severe neck pain. She thinks this is related to her crooked neck when she was a child in Germany.

Brief Answer:
May be a flu

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxx,

Thanks for the question. I understand the concerns that you have.

It seems that your mother may have a flu. A flu is a viral infection that is caused because of certain viruses. Common symptoms of flu are:
Fever
Chills
Weakness
And a runny nose

Sometimes, the flu can also cause the person to have muscle pains as well. These pains are more obvious in the areas of injury. It is possible that the neck was already injured before and this is causing the pain.

If the fever or the neck pain persist for more than 5 days, then it is unlikely to be just because of a flu and it would be a good idea to get it checked up.

I hope I have answered your query. Please post a follow up if you have more questions.

It is not the flu, this is different. It travels from right side to left side.

Brief Answer:
Possible muscle strain

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxx,

Are you saying that the neck pain goes from the right to the left?

The most common cause of such kind of pain is muscle strain. Here are a few things you can try to see if they help:
Ice the area for 10 mins and then warm the area with a hot water bag for 5 minutes
Massage the area
Elevate the head side of the bed while sleeping to allow blood to flow to the heart
Get her to drink plenty of water and go for walks often

Try these for about 10 days. If the pain persists after that, please take her to see a doctor. An examination of the neck is needed to confirm the cause. It is possible that she has a bone or ligament issue if the pain lasts for that long.

I hope I have answered your query. Please post a follow up if you have more questions.
