Question: I am suffering from constipation. If I do not take stool softeners/laxatives then I cannot go to the bathroom and I throw up at least once a day. It is like if it does not come out as a bowel movement then I throw it up. This morning I threw up greyish/black liquid. I am taking 4 stool softener/laxatives in the morning and three in the evening. Without them I cannot go to the bathroom. I am throwing up almost every morning. I am having severe stomach pains. My AFT and LFT are close to 500.

Dear Madam ,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that more important issue is your vomiting and deranged liver functions , there is a strong possibility of viral hepatitis which needs immediate attention . You should get hepatitis markers tested like HbsAg , HAV , Anti HCV immediately and consult a physician immediately . A repeat LFT is necessary to see if the liver function is deteriorating . Keep yourself hydrated .
For constipation I will tell you to add isabgol or psyllium husk for constipation , it may be because of underlying hepatitis going on . Since you have IBS , you may be having constipation predominant IBS . All this needs evaluation . Kindly seek medical help at the earliest .
Take care.

I have had extensive blood work done and the only thing they could find wrong was my aldolase which was 19. I have had a liver biopsy which came back normal. I went to a neuromuscular specialist last week about the aldolase because they were concerned I might have a muscular issue (I have been falling recently), but he said I am fine. Maybe taking too many medications. When you said I should see a physician immediately, do you mean I should call my doctor tomorrow or go to the emergency room today?
Thank you.

Dear Sir,
I thought this is new issue and you have not been evaluated for this thats why I asked to see your doctor immediately but now since you have been thoroughly evaluated this is not required . Just keep in regular touch with your doctor as he has advised you .
Aldolase is a muscle enzyme , if other muscle enzymes like CPK , LDH are raised then a suspicion of myositis will be there but your neurologist would have seen into that issue. Sometimes liver enzymes specially SGOT can be raised because of myositis so may confuse the picture.

I guess my concern is about the vomiting. No one seems to address this. I am losing weight and not able to eat because I am so nauseous all the time. Can this be caused be the elevated liver tests?

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,
It can be because of deranged liver functions , You can take a proton pump inhibitor like pantaprazole and domperidone combination for this after consulting your doctor , which will help address this issue.
