Suggest Treatment For Decay In The Molars Of A Toddler

Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: Question for a paediatric dentist - I took my 23 months old daughter to a paediatric dentist for a general check up. This was her first visit to the dentist. He checked and suggested filling for 2 molars where decay (he showed us slight yellowing) has started at a very early stage. He also suggested sealants for the other two where decay has not yet started but may start. And then a fluoride coating for the entire teeth 6-8 months when she has all teeth. I just wanted to understand if this is the best course of treatment advisable at her age. We otherwise follow twice a day brushing schedule and rinse her mouth after every meal.

Read your query and understand your concern as you have visited dentist and undergone restoration in molars teeth and your dentist has also suggested you best treatment in 6 -8 months .
As you are asking for best course of treatment at her age for this age I will suggest you brush your child teeth for 2 minutes with soft bristle toothbrush with cushioned head using non flourinated toothpaste . You can use kidodent toothpaste also.
- Gently massage your child gums with pulp of finger for one minutes daily .
- child's age at 2 year and above use fluorinated toothpaste to prevent decay .
-visit dentist for pit and fissure sealant and fluoride coating for entire teeth when all teeth erupted in oral cavity.
-Visit dentist every 6 months for clinical examination and to ensure proper tooth development .

Wishing her good health .

Hope I have answered your query .
If you have further query I will be happy to help .

So should we go for the filling that I asked about? Is it painful? Are there any restrictions before or after the procedure? How long does the procedure take on an average per tooth?

Brief Answer:
yes go for Restoration

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

Welcome again .

Yes you should go for filling . It is not painful . No restrictions as such before and after procedure is taken but one precaution you can take that after restoration avoid eating food for half an hour give material time to set properly. Time taken for procedure can be approximately 10 to 15 mins. Per tooth .

Hope I have answered your query .
