Ferrous sulphate induced mucosal toxicity
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs. XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. It appears, ferrous sulphate is causing local injury of mucosa leading to mucosal damage.
2. The mucosal damage is causing dryness and stickiness of mouth and tongue.
3. As the mucosa is damaged, any stimulation through any agents, wont help. Oranges and citrus fruits can irritate the damaged mucosa further, and yes, it can make it worse.
4. Have you tried stopping ferrous sulphate for 15 days (for mucosa to regenerate properly) anytime? If not, you need to try it.
How much is your hemoglobin? If it is above 10g%, you can give it a try. If required, iron rich foods can be tried.
At present, you are possibly having ferrous sulphate induced mucosal toxicity due to oxidative stress. You need to stop it atleast for 15 days, for mucosa to properly regenerate.
Take oral Vit C and Zinc tablets for faster healing. Need to completely avoid ferrous sulphate for confirmation and complete evaluation.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
Dr. Prakash HM
Have been on ferrous sulphate for years, after very low count, saw a specialist for bone marrow, found nothing, told me to continue.
Not tried stopping it but will now try for 15 days.
Can the ferrous sulphate problem affect people more when over 60 ?
Would parkinsons make it worse ?
Yes, parkinsons can make it worse.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.
Yes, ferrous sulphate problem has been seen even at age of 82 years. So yes, it can affect elderly. Particularly, in elderly, glands are reduced due to aging and this can increase further dryness.
Parkinson patients swallow repetitively and hence results in swallowing of saliva. This makes the throat dry commonly.
Also, Parkinson medications can have certain side effects which can affect oral cavity.
However, as you are not on treatment, we can think of compounding problem with ferrous sulphate being the possible cause. You should start noticing improvement within 10 days. Do get back to me within 10 days, as the query usually gets closed after 15 days. We will follow up as necessary.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
