Suggest Treatment For Extreme Fatigue And Cough
Question: Hello, my wife is suffering from extreme fatigue, which started in January when she had a concussion as a result of a serious car accident. At the moment she also has a viral infection and cough, but the underlying issue is still fatigue. She is constantly tired. She may have one good day but then has several where she has no energy and often needs to have a nap in the afternoon. She has had urine tests and a blood test recently. Her latest blood test indicated a slight issue with her thyroid. Any suggestions as to where to look next? Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Normalisation of the thyroid function can eliminate the symptom of fatigue.
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, welcome to HCM,
Being constantly tired is an important symptom of hypothyroidism or low thyroid. If the tests confirm this diagnose, it is important to start the right treatment (Hormonal replacement therapy).
You can discuss with your treating Doctor about this and decide what is the best thing to do for your wife.
Anyway I'm sure she will feel much better after taking the right dosage of Levothyroxine (this is a replacement for a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland ).
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wish you good health.

Hello Dr. Xhardo, my wife went to her doctor again and had more specific tests for thyroid, B12, etc. According to her doctor, she is fine, so no need to have treatment for thyroid. She had been told about a potential thyroid problem when she went to the hospital to obtain treatment for a UTI after the medication prescribed by her doctor was not successful in clearing the infection. The hospital did blood and urine tests where they confirmed that there was a slight UTI which they did not feel warranted treatment. The hospital doctor then told my wife that the blood test had uncovered a thryoid deficiency. However when my wife returned to her doctor, the doctor did further blood and urine tests and found no issues. So we still have the fatigue but no ideas about what is causing it. Any suggestions? Thank you very much.
Brief Answer:
In my opinion maybe your wife need a psychologist checkup.
Detailed Answer:
Hi dear user
I can understand your concern.
Fatigue may be related lots of causes:Use of alcohol or drugs,Excess physical activity,Jet lag,Lack of physical activity,Lack of sleep, Medications: such as antihistamines and cough medicines;Unhealthy eating habits etc
But, in my opinion ,if all the blood and urine tests are normal maybe your wife's problem do not have an organic basis. It can be a pchycological cause due to post traumatic situation(the car accident sometimes has serious pchycological consequences long term.)
I suggest (to your wife)to meet a psychologist and to discuss with him all the aspects of her actual situation.
Hope my information will help you.
Thank you for using HCM.
