Suggest Treatment For Hardening And Discoloration At The Site Of IV Transfusions
Question: My husband returned from the hospital yesterday after having been in a week from a GI bleed for which they did not find the source. It's quit bleeding now. He had several IV lines put in and one has evidently "blown". It's in his lower right arm and is hard and raised and red and sore. He's been putting hot packs on it all day per the hospital's checkout instructions, but it's not going away and it seems to be somewhat worse tonight. What is it and what to do?
Brief Answer:
It's thrombophlebitis.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Sometimes after transfusions and IV drugs, the punctured vein may get inflamed and thrombosed.
This leads to hardening and discoloration of area with swelling. It takes time for such symptoms to resolve.
Apply ice and thrombophob gel for a week on affected area. This will help symptoms to resolve soon.
Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.
Regards.
