Question: My husband has been feeling ill for 3 weeks. No fever, but chills, shaking, some headaches, some tingling in the hands, very fatigued and weak, and to top it all off, intermittent nausea and loss of appetite. First doctor visit did the usual tests found nothing but gave us no way to move forward. Second doctor is trying to help us, we ruled out most common viral infections, now thinking about a ct scan and brain - what do you think this could be in an otherwise normal 60 year old?

Thank you for writing back. Yesterday afternoon, my husband had a CT scan of the brain and a CT scan of the abdomen. We have not yet received the results.

The CT scan showed nothing out of the ordinary. So we went to an infectious disease specialist. He put my husband on ZPac because of the sinus headaches he has been having. Other than that he was stumped. He ordered a C+reactive protein test, 2 blood cultures, and a CK test. He got all those tests this morning except the 2nd blood culture because the lab had run out of kits. So he will go back tomorrow for the 2nd blood culture. So far we have ruled out thyroid problems, Lyme disease, lupus, mono, diabetes to name a few. We do have a test for West Nile virus which hasn't come back yet. We were in south Florida a couple of weeks in August and went down to Key West in May, but we were not in a known Zika area. Should he be tested for Zika? What do you think this might be or what other tests would you recommend? The ID guy thought that if his tests were all negative, my husband should try to ride this thing out 2 more weeks and then get some different tests. Thank you for your help. This has been so difficult for him, never seen him so sick before.

we are going to try to get in with UT Southwestern internal medicine doctor as soon as possible. Yesterday along with the nausea he experienced chest pains and so I took him to the emergency room. There he had a bunch more tests and they ruled out all kinds of common things by doing chest x ray, contrast cat scan, various blood tests. So now he has had 2 chest x rays not turning up anything. Does that rule out TB? The doctor at ER thought we should follow up with a research institution because it seems like a more difficult diagnosis. I will mention the tests you suggested to the doctors. My husband did have a colonoscopy 3 years ago which was fairly normal, maybe one polyp removed if I remember right. The ER doctor thought endoscopy would be in order. He gave us a prescription for Zofran (to use together with the Phenargan - I hadn't heard about doing that before) and something for acid reflux.
