Question: i TYPE SLOWLY. My wife, 42 yrs old, is in a hospital because of mental illness and her typeII diabetes, ssince age 6 and brittle since 10. She has been on Levermere, 8-10 units 2x a day and sliding scale 0f NPH-R (it works better on her than the newer insulins) to adjust when over 200 5-10 onits. The endo team at UCI Med Center for the neuro phacility insised that she be changed to Lantus. I informed them that she had a seevee reaction in a hosptal that we were told was from the Lantus. I made the endo team aware of this and they insist on keeping her on the Lantus. She is also on Haldol, after 3 years o doing well oon Abilify 20mg. I forgot, she is extremely hypoglycemic and can go from 800 to 30 in 10 minutes because pancreas occasionally produces insulin after she has arleady taken a dose. She has been DKA 14 times in the last 3 years most of which have been with a glucose over 1000. Rx list .com listts several warings and side effects that are potentially life threatening that she is exhibiting on the lantus and hasnt had on levermere. She now has tremors and is confused besides having the irritability from it. Rx list.com also says not to give the lantus to type II that suffer from hypoglycimia cause it can be fatal. What do I do and how do I get intervention. She cant get out of a mental hospital if they think, and they do, that the confsion is just the way she is and not from the med. Please, somebody help us!

Brief Answer:
They are not supposed to do anytiing unethical

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all you are the guardian of the patient and nobody can do anything which is not in the interest of the patient. Tell the treating doctors firmly that you are sure about the adverse reaction with lentus and you are not willing to take another risk while subjecting her to this intervention.

I do not think you need any others intervention in this regard. In case they are not listening you give in the writing to the hospital management and keep one copy along with you for record purpose.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.
