Suggest Treatment For High Blood Sugar Levels While On Treatment For UTI
Question: my mother blood sugar just shot up to 400...she just got out of the hospital as she has been fighting a UTI for 2 months...they did hydration and iV antibotics....I wanted she to go to a rehab hospital as she is recovering from a broken hip and shoulder and now two months out they are allowing her to use and bare some weight on the arm...but they said no and sent her home after 48 hrs...
I just rechecked the sugar and it is 420 I set the timer to recheck in 10 min as she took 15 unit of fast acting about 20 mins ago...she had not missed any doses she took at dinner plus the long acting she takes every night...
I set the timer for 10 mins. to retest and I am going to do so now.just re took the sugar it has come down from 420 to 410 in a 15 min. interval....the 15 units was given over 30 mins ago now. Should we do another 15 units or wait and retest in another 15 mins. ?

Brief Answer:
The glucose level should be checked after 1 hour.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I do appreciate your concern regarding to your mother's health.
First of all you should try to find out why her glucose level are so high:
- is there still any infection untreated?
- Does she eat too much?
- Does she takes insulin properly?
If none of the above results, than she needs higher doses of insulin.
For the moment you should wait and check it after one hour.
You should check the ketones in urine too.
If they are positive then you should seek medical help.
Hope the information will help
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
