Question: I am freaked out by my blood sugar levels.

I am not diabetic as far as i know.

My blood sugar is always about 70-80 3-4 hours after eating.

I checked my blood sugar level and when i eat a burrito with tortilla, white rice, black beans and cheese with a medium size chocolate chip cookie my blood sugar level went between 147-164. i took two readings and both in this range after and hour or so. the day before i ate the same burito and blood sugar was 126 after 40 minutes. i ate a 6 inch sub on white bread and my blood sugar was 119 after an hour. in the morning after coffee with cream and half teaspoon of sugar my level is 105. are these very high levels?

I am confused by what i read. there is conflicting information. some say 140 after 2 hours some say blood sugar should never go above 120? Also can anxiety increase blood sugar?

They say 140 after 2 hours but what is a normal peak before 140 2 hours?

Also, how much can stress and anxiety make blood sugar levels go up?

Brief Answer:
Stress can be a trigger factor of Diabetes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I read carefully your concerns.
The blood sugar level should not exceed 140 mg/dl after eating.
Fasting should be 70-105 mg/dl.
More information would give HbA1c level, it is considered as the ''black box'' of the body. Every 3 months it gives a median value of the glucose levels.
Stress is a well known factor for raising blood sugar as a result of high catecolamins levels released during stress.
Anyway, in a normal person the blood sugar should not exceed 140 mg/dl regardless of the situation.
Hope i have answered your query.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

Brief Answer:
Up to 140 mg/ dl is the highest normal value

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
Values over 140 mg/dl are considered abnormal regardless of the cause.
Anyway, if they are measured with glucotest there exists a risk of ''mistake'', they may give values up to 40 mg/ dl higher or lower in comparison with laboratory values.
So if you at risk for Diabetes or prediabetes, you should see your treating physician and he may recommend you exams in the laboratory as well as an HbA1c level.

Brief Answer:
A1c level is perfect.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Hba1c level 4.9% is perfect.
The glucotest you use at home is not very accurate, as you see.
So, as i suggested before, if you have risk factors check them in laboratory.

Dr.Mirjeta
