Suggest Treatment For Mucus In Stool Of Baby

Question: My 2 months baby has mucous in her stool and has pus 4-7hpf .what is the reason for the same
Brief Answer:
It is a normal finding - do not worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi...for a 2 month old baby who is exclusively in mother's milk or formula feeds it is very normal to have mucus in the stool and also when examined in microscopy, to have some pus cells. Do not worry.
Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
There is no need to use probiotics like Sporolac powder also.

My baby weighed 5.3 kgs on 22nd Dec.on a different scale today she weighed 5.15kga.can she loose 150 gms in 2 days.is it because of the green mucousy stool and pus cells .her doc is not starting her on any antibiotics now and wants to repeat a stool examination after a week.should I worry about the weight loss .is it because of different weighing scales or because of the infection.she has also be diagnosed with gerd grade 3 and since yesterday she has spit up milk 4 to 5 times.the volume of milk coming out is not high but the frequency has gone up all of a sudden.
Wanted to add that She was fussy all night yesterday and did not sleep at all.the doctor has prescribed z and d syrup and colicaid drops..

Brief Answer:
Loosing 5% bodyweight is common in loose stools
Detailed Answer:
Hi....loosing 5% if body weight is common during diarrhea. This vsn happen without any side effects.
Your pediatrician was right, this loose stools without blood in the motion do not warrant antibiotics. This is quite common in any breast fed of formula fed baby of this age.
A iI have already clarified in our previous interaction - unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhea. I suggest you use zinc supplements...which your pediatrician has already prescribed.
This is not related to grade 3 GER she has. Some amount of vomiting or regurgitation is expected with diarrhea.
By the way I want to add one more positive point that a 2 month old baby weighing 5.15 is doing excellently well. This amount of weight loss is expected in loose stools as 80% of body weight is because of water.
