Suggest Treatment For Neck Pain With Raised Pigmented Area On Back

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Dec 2015
Question: Dear Sir / Madam,

I am obtaining a second opinion.

My mother has been in pain for about 6 months now in the back of her neck. I attach some photos where you can see the red swelling and white bits (don't know what it is).

Upon touching the area it seems the area is disjointed and is not normal say compared to a normal neck. This is affecting my Mother's everyday life, in pain every day.

We have seen a doctor and they have referred her to a Physiotherapy. This isn't yielding any results, although we have had only one session.

Would have a guess to see what the issue could be and what options we may have ?

Best,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
Please attach the photos.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
There are no photos attached to the query. Please upload the photo so that i can evaluate the swelling she on the back of her neck.
Your History suggests she has
1.) Cervical Spondylosis
2.) Intervertebral Disc Bulge
The above conditions cause pressure over the nerves and the symptoms. Treatment includes
1. Use of cervical collar helps in immobilisation and brings relief.
2. Medical drugs like pain killers - acetaminophen/ibuprofen and muscle relaxants might be helpful.
3. Methylcobalamin supplements are also recommended for nerve compression symptoms.
4. Cervical isometric exercises are beneficial to maintain the strength of the neck muscles. Neck and upper back stretching exercises, as well as light aerobic activities, also are recommended under the guidance of a physical therapist.
5. Hot fomentation helps in relieving acute symptoms.
6. She can avoid using a pillow.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Swelling is not causing pain in neck.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
I have seen the attached images. The swelling is a raised pigmented area. It is not related to the pain in the neck. This needs to be examined by a dermatologist and if it is actively growing in size then should be biopsied to rule out melanoma.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
