Question: I was in a serious car wreck today and my hand is sore and painful around the knuckles. How do I know if I need an xray? Also, there are shared of glass everywhere in my body, including my face. Little tiny shards. How do I get them out? Expecially, out of my face?

Brief Answer:
An X-ray of hand can show if breaks and also can show penetrating shards.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Joane,

I am glad that you made it out of that car wreck!

About your hand, if the painful area hurts severely, or if there is any deformity, or much swelling, then do get an Xray.

About the little shards: given the trauma you sustained including a concussion, I think it best to go in and have them help you with removing them. The ER staff may not have noticed them all when you were in before given that they were more focused on making sure your head and spine were ok. Glass can penetrate quite deeply but leave only narrow puncture wounds, so having someone else remove them from your face (and elsewhere) would be a good idea. If you can't go back in to the ER, then have a friend or family do it. Rinse your face with cold water to remove any pieces that are on the surface, clean a tweezers with alcohol, and attempt to remove what you can. If shards are buried more deeply though, you will need help from medical staff.

I hope this helps.
