In such a case hot compress alternating with cold compress should provide relief. You can take some analgesics like naproxen if felt required. The underlying cause of the inflammation needs to be evaluated. You need to visit a doctor and get an X ray of both knees - AP and lateral done. Based on the findings, some blood tests might be required to evaluate for arthritis or gout. Definitive treatment will depend upon the underlying cause.
