Suggest Treatment For Pain In Foot

Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: My son has this pain in his foot that feels like a pulled muscle. He's had it happen once maybe 3 years ago. He says it will hurt slightly but then when he wakes in the morning he can't put any weight on the foot or it will hurt a lot. It usually goes away after a couple days if he stays off that foot. I'm just wondering if there is a possibility of this being a larger issue.

Brief Answer:
Heel bone fracture, Heel bony spur or Plantar fascitis possible

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

Common causes of heel pain which get worse in the morning include Plantar fascitis which occurs due to tightening and inflammation of the covering layer in the foot that can cause pain. The pain is worse in the morning on waking up and keeping the feet on the ground and improves by evening. This causes tightening of the calf muscles which aggravated the pain.

I would recommend that he hey am Xray of the foot and heel to rule out other disorders like heel bone fracture, bony spur or epiphyseal inflammation. A bony spur may need to be surgically removed for relief. Old fracture needs to be treated according to the type and chronicity of the fracture with by user of plaster cast or surgery.

He can apply hot water bag to the painful region, take pain killers like Ibuprofen twice a day. Eat healthy and remain fit, prevent obesity as this aggravates the condition. Also calf stretching exercises and use of a night foot drop splint are helpful. Also use of soft footwear is needed like MCR rubber slippers. Avoid using hard footwear.

If the relief isn't obtained by these methods in a couple of weeks, he could get a steroid shot near the heel which will give significant relief for upto 3 months.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

The pain is actually closer to the toes in the arch of the foot. Would this make a difference in a diagnosis?

Brief Answer:
Gout, Flatfoot, Osteochondritis needs to be looked for as causes of pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the follow up query.

In such a case, he needs to be tested for Gout and also Flatfoot which can be caused by an Accessory Navicular bone.

He can get a Serum Uric acid analysis and an Orthopaedics consult to rule out flatfoot, stress fractures of the metatarsals or osteochondritis.

Applying warm pack will give relief till then.
