Suggest Treatment For Scalp Pimples

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Sep 2014
Question: Hi, I have a small flesh colored pimple like thing on scalp. Its probably about 1-2 mm in size. It doesn't have too much pain or anything. Little more background, I do have a history of scalp pimples or whatever that is.
What is this?.
Also, I have recently done my whole body check-up and everything looks good. I am tired of visiting dermatologist for every small pimple and it's draining. So, am trying out this medium to know.
Also, I have jock itch infection, even that doesn't go away forever. I thought probably diabetes was the reason, but I don't have any diabetes. Please advise and suggest.

Brief Answer:
Trichilemmal cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I read history and saw the photo you posted. I think, most probably you have trichilemmal cyst. It is also called pilar cyst or wen. It is a common cyst that forms from hair follicle. It commonly occures on scalp. It may be small, smooth and filled with keratin, a protien that is found in skin, nails and hairs. It is a benign condition and rarely becomes enlarged. Some times, may become infected. It does not spread to other parts of the body or cause any serious problems. Very rarely, a skin cancer may develop from trichilemmal cyst.

As, in your case..the trichilemmal cyst is small and not infected, you may keep it untreated. However, you consult dermatologist.

Whenever you feel embarassed, you may go for removal of the cyst.

It may be easily removed by a simple operation, under local anaesthetic. The surrounding skin is numbed by injecting some local anaesthetic. A small incision (cut) is made over the cyst. Typically, the cyst can be easily pulled out. The wound is then stitched up. A small scar will result. Sometimes, after the removal of a cyst, it gradually regrows in the same site under the scar. This is unusual but, if it occurs, it can be removed again. I hope you might understood my view.

Second, you also complained of Jock itch..means tinea cruris. It occured frequently... Right? It is a fungal infection and can be easily treated. I usually prescribe antifungal like itraconazole or ketoconazole for about two weeks and to apply antifungal cream like clotrimazole. Antihistaminic like levocetirizine may be taken to relieve itching. Keep the area dry. Avoid soap at bath, you use dettol liquid for bath. Blood investigations may be done to rule out diabetes,HIV and other immunocompromised conditions.

I hope this answer would be helpful to you... Still, any query..you are welcome.

Have good health.

Thanks.

Thanks Doctor for the reply. On pillar cyst, it seems like your opinion is to keep it untreated as there is no infection indicated. Also, it's a common cyst right on which I shouldn't sleep over. These days I have very heightened anxiety over my health. If there is infection, what do you suggest?.

Also, I have done numerous blood tests 2 days back as I am a case of an anxious personality(probably, my doctor also believes I am too stressed out) and I have done - AST Serum, ALT Serum, TSH, Total protein, ultrasound Abdomen, blood urea, chest x-ray, ALP Serum, Bilirubin Serum, Calcium Serum, CBP, ESR, Creatinine Serum, CUE, Fasting Glucose, Hb a1c, HBs Ag, Lipid Profile. All are in normal range values. Also, there was a fnac test done as well.

Do you advice anything else?. Can stress, lack of exercise causes these dermatologic conditions?.

Oh and also I forgot to mention I have HIV Antibody test done as well in very recent past(like few months back) which was also negative(my doctor hated to even write it off as I have always been in a monogamous relation). So, please advice based on my question on top.

Trichilemmal cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I hope you have been satisfied with my answer. The trichilemmal cyst is not related with any type of stress or tension. And all the blood reports are normal. So, you should not have any reason for tension related with health.

Be calm and do not worry. Enjoy the life without stress.

Wishing you healthy life.

Thanks.
