Suggest Treatment For Severe Abdominal Pain When Diagnosed With Pancreatitis

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: I have been diagnosed with pancreatitis. I have severe abdominal pain radiating to my back. My doctor had advised to stop eating and keep hydrating. The pain started at midnight last night and has continued to intensify. I hesitate to go to the hospital emergency room as a have an endoscopic ultrasound scheduled for this coming Tuesday and cannot take any pain killers or vitamins or supplements prior to this procedure. An MRI has shown a small tumor near the pancreas and a biopsy will be performed. I do not wish to jeopardise this important test. How can I reduce this pain now.

The instructions from my gastroenterologist are as follows: 3 days prior to procedure, stop all aspirin products, NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, naproxen, Aleve, Celebrex) unless on these medications for medical conditions other than arthritis or pain management: use Tylenol if needed.

The pain started around 1230am on July 23nd and has continued to intensify. I have taken extra-strength Tylenol at 1230pm and 630pm on July 23rd and again this morning at 1230am July 24th. Each time I have not received any relief from the pain. I had nothing to eat all day yesterday and have been drinking lots of water. I have also used a heating pad to relieve the discomfort in my back.

Thank you for your response and I anxiously wait for your reply.

Brief Answer:
Ultracet

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the additional information.
Whatever you have mentioned is just one group of painkiller medications.
Your doctor advised you to stop these to prevent abnormal bleeding in case if he wants to do any biopsy.

There is another group of painkiller medications which does not cause abnormal bleeding. Ultracet is one such medication. You can take it for pain relief if your pain is due to pancreatitis.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K
