Suggest Treatment For Severe Headache In A Hypertensive Person

Question: I have had a headache at the base of my head where the neck and skull meet for the past 5 years straight. I have been to neurologist, been to physical therapy and traction, Dr has me on high blood pressure pills (I don't have high blood pressure) he told me it can be used to help headaches, taking flexor ealing muscle relaxers, and other prescription meds. I told the Dr I would take anything as long as it wasn't additive or a norcrotic. I had a partial right temporal lobotomy in 86. The only thing my neurologist has come up with is that some people who have had brain surgery have chronic headaches. I would accept that if the headaches started years ago after the surgery but it didn't the headaches started 20 years after. If you put your hands together and place them at the base of the head where the head meets the neck and bring your hands over to your ears and that is where my head hurts.

Brief Answer:
Exclude other possible cause / go for spinal surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thank you for your query through Health care Magic.
I have read your queries & understand your question.
You have the complaint since 5 years. You are under care of a neurologist.
There are few more conditions which typically cause the pain at base of head, as you have it. They are-
- Poor neck posture ( specially bending neck forwards.. ) while sitting, standing position./ sleeping posture/ sedentary life.
- Excessive strain of neck muscles .. due to over work/ heavy head moved more frequently .
- Neck problems - slipped disc/ arthritis of neck joints/ tumor at the base of skull..
- Bone weakness - osteoporosis of occipital bone can trigger the pain like yours.
- Nerve problems ( trauma/ pinching of nerves )
* your doctor must have investigated & excluded these while diagnosing your head ache... If not you should consult an orthopedic specialist for the same.& get specific management in case any one of them is confirmed to be the basic cause.
* About blood pressure medication (without any signs of blood pressure) for relieving head ache I would suggest to cross check with a physician & the continue it.
* In my opinion, any surgery is unlikely to show side effects after 20 years of surgery. So is the case with your brain surgery.( temporal lobotomy)
*You had been using physical therapy, traction, muscle relaxants for the pain .. as advised by neurologist. IF the case of the head ache is confirmed to be spinal,
I would advise you to consult your Neurologist for-
- Taking some NSAID drug when the pain is non bearable.
- Consider the option of surgical treatment to manage the nerve compression due to cervical spinal problem.
I hope the answer was informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
