Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Right Leg

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Oct 2017
Question: Every month a few days before my cycle, the veins behind my knee on my right leg will swell and pinch. The veins also will look darker. I am a 21 year old woman. I've added a photo. This only happens a few days before my period, and also during my period. It goes away for a couple of weeks but it's worrisome. I've seen a few doctors that tell me it's just "varicosing veins". Could this be it? Why would my cycle affect this?

Brief Answer:
These are Varicosities which increase due to hormonal imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to Health Care Magic.
Thank you for your question.
What you have been told is right.
These are Varicose Veins which increase and decrease during periods due to hormone surge. The action of hormones Progesterone and Estrogen in your blood changes during menstrual periods which has an effect on the Varicosities. There is nothing to fear in this.
But you should get a Color Doppler test of the Venous system of both your legs. This can be done at any Radiology center and is a painless investigation like an Ultrasound.
This will tell us what stage the Varicoisities are in and will guide in the management of the same.
Till then I advice you to wear Class II compression stockings till above knee whenever you are standing or walking or running. This will keep the Varicosities in check and will arrest their progression.
Take care and do let me know the report.
