Question: I'm wondering about http://www.worldofhair.com/wraps/ body wraps to reduce abdominal fat, do you have an opinion as to whether or not the ingreds (seaweed, etc,) are okay for the body and if a person were to use these body wraps, is there a possibility that the heart rate may be affected?

Hi and welcome to Healthcare magic

Detailed Answer:
Madam, since they only list clay and seaweed, a comprehensive answer is not possible. I will say that if you have hypothyroidism, yes, this can be dangerous due to a possible overdose of iodine, depending on how much is absorbed through the skin.

You realize whatever inches are lost will not be permanent. Anything that caused "instant" weight loss is usually operating on our system of water metabolism and retention. I imagine the wrap draws the water out of the tissues, thus temporarily shrinking the area. The clay will temporarily tighten skin just as a clay cleanser will do to your face.

I don't see it as dangerous if you are healthy and remain hydrated, but I also do not see long term benefits that only exercise, resistance training and calorie manipulation can create.

Good luck to you. I hope I have addressed your question. If so, kindly close and rate the query. Regards, Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
