Question: i took Mucinex DM for moderate flu but very heavy congestion. 4 tabs in 2 days. The wheezing sounds in my trachea tubes are gone, but my mouth and throat are so dry that I need to keep a bottle of water with a hole punched in the cap, and squirt a bit in my mouth at least once every minute; otherwise I start coughing again. Right now my throat is so very sore from coughing - I cannot take the irritation; nor can my wife. The orignal fever is gone but i cannot sleep because I need to continue to the water. Ice cream solves the problem also, but I don't want to go there. I took the last Mucinex five hours ago so I have a long time to wait for it to wear off. I'm not taking too much water; with the pin-hole in the cap I've gone through about 1500 mL in the past four hours. KH in XXXXXXX PA. Jeez, I got this far by the time my credit card was accepted and did not see that the answer will be with 24 hours. My fault I guess. No point in answering if not soon. Lesson learned. Mucinex lesson learned as well.

1. It's unfair to blame the Mucinex DM tablet for all the dryness. While it is true that there is a side effect of dryness with this medication, it also appears that you are dehydrated by the fever and flu.

2. As far as the dose of Mucinex DM is concerned, the side effects should disappear in about 12 hours.

3. Hence any persisting symptoms beyond another 6 hours will also be due to the flu. In addition take fresh cream and honey based mixtures to soothe the throat, reduce irritation and cough. You may add a little crushed ginger and black pepper to taste.
