Posted on Wed, 24 Sep 2014
Question: Hello Doctor -

I had a colonoscopy this morning and doctor removed one polyp during the procedure.

What kind of complications happen after the procedure?
If perforation happens, when the symptoms appear? How to know if it happened?

What things need to watch for after the procedure?

Thanks for your time and expert advice.

Best Regards

Brief Answer:
Monitor for bleeding&unusual pain...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

You will have little bleeding for a couple of days. Usually, no serious complication will happen after this procedure.

Perforation is not a common complication. In case perforation would occur, you'll have unusual pain. The higher the scope has gone (up to sigmoid); the higher the chances for perforation. Otherwise, there is minimal chance for perforation.

You should monitor bleeding and any unusual sign of pain and/or fever.

Hope it answered to your queries!

Thanks doctor for your answer.
Does polyp removal/biopsy cause perforation?
If the perforation occurs, when the symptoms starts? Immediately after the procedure or it may take few days?

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

Yes, polyp removal can cause in rare cases perforations, especially when polyps are located in the upper colon (i.e. sigmoid). It not common for perforation to cause while taking biopsy as small amount of tissue (microscopic) is taken off.

Usually, perforation symptoms will show at the same day you had the colonoscopy. If no signs (i.e. pain), until now, then, nothing to worry about perforation. It does not take days to show off but within the same day, immediately after the procedure.

All the best!
