Brief Answer:
If you are changing birth control brands- you do not need to wait a week

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The advice to wait a week before trusting birth control pills as effective without a backup method only applies if you are not already using another birth control method. If you just stopped the patch and your period started during the normal patch-free week, the patches from the month before will still be protecting you against pregnancy. As long as no more than a week went by without your being on some form of birth control, you are protected against pregnancy.

Furthermore- most women do not ovulate during their period, so if you started the pills while you were still bleeding, your chances of getting pregnant are still close to zero.

So in summary- it really doesn't matter that you had unprotected sex before taking the new pill for a week, as you were still protected from the patch and you had your period when you started the pill.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,
