What Are The Side Effects Of Encorate Chrono?
Question: Hi, My wife is taking encorate chrono 300mg. One tablet in morning and 2 tablets in the night along with Oleanz 20mg in the night. Does it has any side effects over a period of time and if yes, what will be the side effects. Can she conceive while continuing this medication. If yes, will there be any impact on the child? Please advise.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
Encorate chorno has sodium valproate and oleanz has olanzapine in it. Both these medications can cause weight gain. Further sodium valproate can cause gastritis , blood dyscrasias, rashes, pancreas damage and liver damage in some cases. But weight gain is the commonest side-effect. Similarly olanzapine can cause diabetes, increased cholesterol, hypertension and metabolic syndrome.
Coming to the second questions, your wife should not concieve while being on these medications as there will be a risk of congenital anomalies in the child - like some parts not being formed or not being well formed. The risk is not very high with olazapine but is very high with sodium valproate. For my patients who are on sodium valoprate, I strictly advice them to use a contraceptive and not to go for pregnancy.
