What Causes Bleeding From Tongue Post Dental Cleaning?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Oct 2015
Question: After a very harsh dental cleaning my teeth bleed for 5 days. And I had A great deal of pain. The 1st day I noticed what felt like a piece of a sticker lodged in two of my teeth on either side of my mouth & it was cutting making my tounge rough. The more I played with one area it started to irritate the gum. Over the last 5 months the problem has spread to about 4 teeth on either side of my mouth one side being much worse. I saw the Dr. whose assistant cleaned my teeth originally and told me he could find nothing. I've seen a peridondondist who said it was burning tounge. But what is not being picked up is that it feels as if there is something that is actually caught in my gums that is sharp, that does eventually come out. It is very small, but because of the size and the slippery nature of mouth I can't retrieve this article. Then it just comes back. This is the same with all teeth. It is very sharp and small and seems to sluff off but come back. Could it be tissue? My gums are so painful and have created the sides of my tounge to be raw. As I talk or eat my tongue rubs along the stickers in my gum. The longer the day goes on the worse it gets. I have never had any thing like this & have always taken excellent care of my teeth. Would appreciate any input U might have. XXXX

Brief Answer:
Seems to be a small piece of calcified deposit known as Calculus..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms it seems that after scaling some small pieces of calcified deposits known as Calculus are left impacted between the teeth and as they are hard and sharp edges must be jetting out they are causing injury to the tongue..
It commonly happens that some portions of deposits are left un-cleaned between the teeth and the individual feels that something hard hitting the side of tongue and the tip when the area is touched and thus injury to tongue is inflicted..

Other cause can be due to sharp edges of the teeth..
With increase in age there is attrition of teeth and the chewing surfaces at times become pointed and irregular and it can also cause injury to the tongue.

But in case if you feel something stuck between the teeth it is most probable that it is calculus..

Nothing to worry, consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and point out the areas where you feel something is stuck in.
Scaling of those areas to remove the impacted deposits can very well and easily resolve your problem.

In case if some teeth have got pointed surfaces then Coronoplasty can be done that is grinding the sharp edges and making them round and smooth..

For raw feeling of the tongue due to injury you can apply a numbing gel containing Lignocaine as it helps in reducing pain and discomfort..
You can also take anti-inflammatory painkiller Ibuprofen for reducing inflammation and pain..

Do not try and touch the tip of the tongue to the sharp areas as it will injure the tongue tip and can cause discomfort..

If you have any more queries or want to give any more information and discuss anything else you are always welcome..

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards..
