What Causes Breast Discharge After Termination Of Pregnancy?
Prolactin level take time to normalize
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
Pregnancy is associated with many hormonal changes and take upto 6-8 weeks to normalize after termination of pregnancy.
One of these changes is secretion of the hormone prolactin (responsible for milk secretion). The level slowly reduces when there is no nipple.empty stimulation.
I would :
- do an ultrasound to check for completion of the abortion (no retained products of conception)
-do a series of beta HCG blood levels (pregnancy hormone) to make sure that it is reducing and normalizes.
These measures can confirm if the pregnancy has been terminated completely
I recommend:
- that you see your OBGYN to check for this if it the abortion was not done under medical supervision.
- that you avoid nipple stimulation for 6 more weeks (avoid hot showers, massaging breasts)
-if breast engorgement is present, cool compresses will help. Medications, like cabergoline, to counteract milk production may also be necessary.
I hope I've been helpful.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
