What Causes Calf Cramps When Diagnosed With Peripheral Neuralgia Due To Type-2 Diabetes?
The calf cramps are something my dad had too. They come mostly in the morning or after laying down for a nap. When I get up with the help of a cane they disappear but they are quite particularly in my right leg which usually has little feeling below the knee.
I tend to get calcium and uric acid kidney stone and have had one removed by surgery.
Multiple causes for cramps. Rx based on cause.
Detailed Answer:
Hello there. Good day! Thanks for writing to HCM. I am Dr Praveen and I will be answering your query today. Noted your question and your previous queries to HCM.
So from what I understand you are a 74 year old male with Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, peripheral neuropathy with a h/o intracranial hypertension, renal calculus and obesity and are suffering from calf cramps in the mornings or during periods of rest.
Well, leg cramps can occur due to a variety of reasons the most common one being mineral depletion (potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium), dehydration and drug induced -medications like diuretics (given for hypertension) and statins (for high cholesterol). Other causes are due to hypothyroidism, peripheral vascular disease, spinal compression syndromes.
I suggest you keep yourself well hydrated, eat nutritiously (maintain your intake of dairy and fruits that is permitted for your medical conditions) and get your blood glucose levels and thyroid function under control to start with. Along with this, it would be good to stretch your lower limb muscles with simple active and passive stretching exercises thrice a day, especially before getting to bed. A warm shower will surely help.
I hope this helps. Wishing you good health.
Regards,
Dr Praveen
