What Causes Coating Of Lips After Eating Or Drinking?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: I suspect we are the same age, 72. In the past few days, after eating or drinking (but not coffee) the front part of my upper and lower lips feel as if they are coated and a bit sticky. It doesn't feel serious but it is annoying.

Brief Answer:
Dehydration or reduce salivation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have been noticing a coating of the lips after eating or drinking. This maybe related to age and a reduction in salivation. As we get older our salivary glands do not produce as much saliva which will make things thicker and stickier. For my patient who complain of this problem I recommend a salivary wetting agent called Biotene. This helps keep the mouth moist and prevent the dryness and stickiness. I recommend that you purchase biotene over the counter and see if this help s reduce the coating of your lips.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns and questions. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me again.
