Question: My 63 yr old husband has just started treatment for multiple myeloma. He is taking 40mg of dexmethasone, four days on and four off. He has developed constant hiccups and cannot sleep. He is in his second day off tabs. Can he take 15mg of oxazepam tonight to try and get some sleep.

Brief Answer:
It need evaluation for the cause before treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HealthcareMagic forum.

I am Dr Aslam here to help you.

Constant hiccups as you mentioned is neither a direct symptom of multiple myeloma, nor a side effect of dexamethasone. So we need to exclude any underlying cause, along with treatment.Usual causes include intestinal obstruction, renal dysfunction etc.

Regarding treatment,in such case, I usually gives a metoclopramide shot, followed by metoclopramide tablets 3-4 times a day for 4-5 days, after excluding any intestinal obstruction. You can discuss this with your treating doctor.

Regarding oxazepam, though it may give sedation,it may not help in constant hiccups.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further questions,I will be happy to help.
Thank you.
