What Causes Constant Pain And Bulging Veins In Shin After An Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Jul 2014
Question: I fell yesterday while going up two steps. Hit my shin very hard on the edge of top step. I have achey pain almost constantly around the area I hit and what feels deeper inside my leg. I can walk and put weight on it but it is painful. Veins are popped out and there is some swelling (an area about the size of my hand). Trying to decide if I should go get an X-ray or not.

Brief Answer:
Take pain medications(Tylenol and Ibuprofen) first

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this fall. It is rather unfortunate that you had to hit your knee this hard. Your concern on whether to do an xray or not is genuine as it will greatly change how this injury would be managed.

If the means are available, I will suggest you get an xray right away to make sure that there is no amount of bone involvement. However, if finances are hard on you, I will recommend that you take pain medications first as prescribed by your pharmacist. Should the pains not regress significantly, then doing an xray would be a great idea to rule out any bone involvement.

In all, go for an x-ray now if financially sound. otherwise, take medications and let's see what the evolution looks like.

I hope you find this guiding enough. Let me know if you have more worries that you would like me to address on this. Thanks so much for using our services.
