What Causes Constant Tingling Sensation In Legs And Arms?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Nov 2015
Question: Hello,

A week ago i started experiencing tingling sensation that that rushes throughout both of my legs (starting from my thighs) and arms, it's been every day since. It's simultaneous and I notice it when I'm at rest sitting down and laying down to sleep. Two days ago along with the tingling sensation, the feeling of pins and needles started so there's some discomfort to it now.

A little back ground:

I had Breast Augmentation 6 weeks ago under the muscle, bilateral incision. I was completely healthy and in good shape before that.

2 weeks after the surgery, i developed shortness of breath which landed me in the ER. Everything came back negative except CT showed some atelectasis.

But since I checked out of the ER then, I started using the spirometer and light walking for the next two weeks and the shortness of breath really really improved but it never really went away. I say I am stuck at 60 %. I am still using the spirometer and it's been a month since I left the ER.

So technically I don't get out of breath anymore, but I have difficulty inhaling deep breaths as easily or as I normally should. So for every 3-4 normal breathing, I have to struggle for deep satisfying breath. I do get it, but it's a struggle and sometimes I noticed leaning forward or bending over forward helps me breathe better.

Questions:

1.What can it be?
2. Can it be related to the surgery?
3. Can it be possible vitamin or mineral deficiency?
4. What tests do i need to take to find out more about my condition?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Peripheral neuropathy should be evaluated/excluded.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Tingling, later on pins and needles in both legs are neurologic symptoms that mostly are attributed to peripheral neuropathy.

This condition could be consequence of several causes such prolonged alcohol use, vitamin B12 deficiency due to poor diet, liver, kidney, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, heavy metals poising, nerve(s) trauma or compression, etc. In some cases, after organic ones are excluded, these symptoms may be related to anxiety and stress disorder.

Those symptoms seems not to be related to your previous surgery.

Examinations needed, to narrow the cause, include blood tests about full blood count, liver, kidneys and thyroid function tests, glucose levels, vitamins B group levels.

Nerve conduction study of your lower extremities also is needed, together with a neurological examination.

The treatment possibilities should be clear after the cause is found. All these issues should be discussed with your primary care Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings

Thank you! Very clear...

Before my surgery, all blood work was done (I'll have it repeated again of course) and all my function test, CBC, liver kidney, lipid, glucose etc were optimal. Not tested for vitamin b groups or thyroid. No alcohol abuse, once a week drinker.

However, it's interesting how you mentioned anxiety and stress. The past 10 days the breathing issue has been really frustrating and exhausting and I have been feeling a lot of anxiety and worry so that is something I'll consider as well.

Any other tests I should be considering?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for the clarifications.

In this case, the cause of your symptoms is narrowed to vitamin B deficiency, thyroid issues and anxiety disorder.

Tests to be considered in my opinion are levels of vitamins B group in blood and thyroid function tests.

Another test that evaluates better peripheral neuropathy is nerve conduction study and EMG.

As always, you should discuss with your treating Doctor about these issues.

Greetings.
