What Causes Dizziness And Imbalance In A Diabetic?

My husband has been diagnosed with diabetes. We have managed it through diet. One of the things he has been experiencing (which caused us to find out he was diabetic) was a dizziness and imbalance. He does not get sick to his stomach or nauseated. He s had an MRI to rule out ear problems and brain problems. This waxes and wanes and he seems to get this the same time every day. Blood monitoring shows no real spike in sugars and blood pressure is not low or outragious. What could this be? We have been told that it is from the neuropathy he experiences, but once we got the blood sugar in safe range, he was experiencing this less and less - duration, etc. Now it has returned in full force.

Hello,

Your husband is suffering from dizziness and imbalance. He is a diabetic. His blood pressure is not low, blood sugar normal. He had an MRI to rule out ear and brain problems. Several conditions that cause dizziness can be related to diabetes. Consider monitoring blood sugar, diet, and type of food consumed.

Your husband is advised to take home made healthy diet, do exercise as recommended, and take his prescribed medications by his treating doctor. A loss of balance, dizziness or fall can be indicative of vestibular problems or neuropathy. He should get clinically examined by a Neurologist & an ENT. He may need medications. He is suggested not to drive or do any heavy work. He should be at rest.

He should be mindful of the medications he has been taking. As medication for blood pressure or water retention, can drop both the blood pressure and potassium levels, causing dizziness. Side effects of other medications such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and non-steroids can also cause dizziness. He should avoid taking medicines that are not required.

Hyperglycemia cause complications like damaged organs, damaged blood vessels, nerve and eye damage, etc. Blood sugar level should be maintained at all cost. Dehydration may cause blurred vision, headache, dizziness, etc. He should not skip meals. Hypoglycemia may cause neurological issues. He should get Nerve conduction velocity tests done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Cardiologist Dr. Ilir Sharka's  Response
Hello,

The dizziness and imbalance could be related to different possible causes:
- Chronic degeneration of the cervical spine
- Peripheral neuropathy and orthostatic hypotension
- Carotid or vertebral artery stenosis

For this reason, I recommend performing further tests:
- Nerve conduction studies
- A cervical spine X-ray study
- A Doppler ultrasound of the carotid and vertebral arteries

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
