What Causes Diarrhea After Decreasing The Dosage Of Omeprazole?

default
Posted on Thu, 21 May 2015
Question: I was trying to cut back on my dosage and split the 20 mg tablets of Omeprazole in half. I had uncontrollable diarrhea all last year until I figured out what had caused it. Can this damage the esophagus and the stomach? I am currently vomiting about every 10-14 days and it is clear, slimy, pink and white tissue. I am wondering if this is related to the Omeprazole that I cut in half? YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
You should try Rifaximine treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The lowest effective dosage of Omeprazole is 20 mgs. Taking 10 mgs is pointless.
Diarrhea can be caused by long term Omeprazole intake indeed. This medicine can caused small intestine infection. Cutting Omeprazole wont help in case of such infection.
What you should do is to have stool culture test to see if there are any bad bacteria in the stool. You should also try Rifaximine treatment for small intestine infection.
If this wont help, next step is colonoscopy and enteroclysis (abdominal CT with oral contrast). This tests should be done as such symptoms can also be caused by partial bowels obstruction.

Stop taking Omeprasole has nothing to do with vomiting and can not just damage the esophagus. You havent mentioned why you do take Omeprasole so its hard to guess if its necessary or not.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
