What Causes Diarrhea After Taking Omnipaque?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Dec 2015
Question: I had a CT colonoscopy today and was advised i did not need a laxative before the test. Instead i was given 150 ml of omnipaque (picture attached). I followed a low fibre diet and drank three ampunts of 50ml of omnipaque 300. (Attached instructions) I have had severe diarrhea since i started the liquid. During the scan there was significant leakage of watery stool. I want to know whether this dose
Of omnipaque seems excessive as from my research the dose should be nearer 20ml? What are the consequences of this 'overdose'?

Brief Answer:
There are no consequences of this dosage as long as you drink much water!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this diarrhea. This is probably caused by the omnipaque. The oral dosage is very different and there is rarely toxicity from this because very little that can leave the intestines and get into the blood circulation. However, higher concentrations in the stomach can cause diarrhea which is what you have reported. To address this, I will recommend that you drink much fluids to compensate for any water lost because of diarrhea. As the product is washed out of the intestines, this will abate. There are no further consequences as a result of this.

Truth is that there is no standard dose for oral preparations and greatly vary with age and body size. I think 50ml was clearly too much from you because it has caused excessive watery stools which shouldn't be the case. In next instances, suggest they keep your dose at a minimum, preferable on the low side.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

The dosage i was given was 150ml, not 50ml. Is that still ok?

Brief Answer:
150mls seems excessive...But will not harm as you took orally!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this precision.

150ml in a day is not too excessive. Beside, when taken orally, it it difficult for it to get into the body and cause any harm. Please, drink much water and all symptoms will soon subside. To further evaluate the dosage, what is your body weight?

Thanks and I hope this reassures you. I wish you well.

Brief Answer:
THis doage is okay!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

With this added information, this dosage is okay. However, even lower doses might have worked well for you seen the huge response to this with profuse watery stools. In strictest terms, it is an okay dose.

I wish you well.
