look for symptoms; vaginal swab culture is diagnostic

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
Vaginal infections are not very uncommon and among the various causes, fungal and bacterial are the two commonest causes of vaginal infections.
Vaginal thrush or vulvovaginal candidiasis is commonly encountered. It has symptoms like excessive itching and irritation, thick white odourous discharge, burning urination and sometimes painful sex. The itching and discharge are very specific.
Whereas bacterial infections are due to various organisms. Here, malodourous discharge with occasional itching, burning urination etc can be present.
The symptoms are somewhat similar. So the diagnosis is best done with a vaginal swab culture if you have the above symptoms. Treatment is according to the diagnosis.

Hope this was useful.
