What Causes Dizziness, Foggy Head And Glazed Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: Hello Doctor, I am a diabetic, I take metformin for it and my blood surge is normally around a 7.5 I don't know if this has anything to do with that or not, but I get dizzy and my head feels foggy, my eyes get very glazed, much like a child with a fever. I feel sick and it stays for an hour or up to 5 hours. I feel like if I shake my head it will clear, but naturally it doesn't. What is going on?

Brief Answer: Diabetes Detailed Answer: I am sorry to note how you are feeling. Will it be possible for you or another person beside you to check your fingerstick capillary glucose reading by a glucose monitor to see what your numbers are? I am suspecting a low sugar reaction ('hypoglycemia') although metformin alone is not known to cause such a problem, if it is the only medicine you take for diabetes. As you said your sugars are around 7.5 which is not terribly high, and definitely cannot cause the symptoms you are experiencing. Metformin can occasionally induce an ill feeling that is hard to describe but has been reported in the literature. Perhaps consider going off metformin for a week or two and see if this resolves. Obviously consult your local doctor to see if another medication for diabetes will be required in the interim to manage the diabetes.
