What Causes Dizzy Spells And Mild Chest Discomfort?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Oct 2016
Question: I have slept poorly the last two nights. Last night my tinnitus was loud (due to loud noise exposure), but not the night before. This morning I felt a bit dizzy and experienced light sweating. I had mild chest discomfit and my left bicep was sore, so my concern was heart related. Any recommendations?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your questions and would explain that your symptoms do not seem to be related to any cardiac disorder( including coronary artery disease).

Lack of sleep and a wrong position during sleep can explain your symptoms.

I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure and heart rate. Low blood pressure could be the cause of dizzinessand tinnitus.

Having some rest, taking plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated will help.

If your symptoms do not improve(or even worsen), I would recommend going to the ER fa physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X-ray study
-some blood lab tests( complete blood count, blood electrolytes, fasting glucose, kidney and liver function tests).

Hope to have been helping!

Feel free to ask me again whenever you need!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hi Dr. I. Feeling much better this morning. However, still have soreness in left arm near tricep which comes and goes, and occasional chest pain. I do have a hiatal hernia, so I suppose that could be a source of the chest pain, but the arm discomfit has me concerned. Could that be angina?
Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Your symptoms are not typical of angina. It may be related to a musculo-skeletal pain.

Is your pain triggered by physical activity? Is it associated to shortness of breath or dizziness? This could be indicative of coronary artery disease.

In such case, I would recommend going to the ER for a physical exam and a resting ECG and cardiac enzymes (CK-MB, Troponin).

Another option if these problems persist, is to consult with your cardiologist and plan for a cardiac stress test to exclude possible coronary artery disease.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
