What Causes Excessive Sleep In Infants Post Vaccination?
Question: Hi doctor,
My 2 month old daughter was given PCV vaccination yesterday morning and since then she has been sleeping a lot. So much so that she's even missing out on her feeds. I am trying hard to wake her up somehow but all in vain. To keep her up with feeds I am extracting milk and giving her through spoon. When she wakes up in between she sucks milk with least interest. Why is it so?
Please tell if it's normal to feel so after this vaccination. She has also not gone to potty since last 4 days now and has lot of gas.

I understand your concerns but don't worry. These are common side effects after immunization. Just ensure regular feeds every 2-4 hours. Stimulate him to feed by flickering the soles and behind ears. Avoid any medicines which can cause sedation as side effect such as decongestants.
Hopefully he will improve within 24 hours.
Infants show a wide variation in colour, frequency and consistency of poops. Sometimes they may pass it even once in a week. So no need for any medicines for this as well.

Thanks doctor. On her regular two month check up I found she has gained only 700 GMs in 2nd month whereas in first month her weight gain was 1 kg. In last 20 days she has gained only 200 GMs. She has been taking feeds every 3-3.5 hours though. It's a reason of worry for me. Paed told me to give her more frequent feeds and if there issue supply demand gap then the same to be fulfilled through top feeds. Please suggest!

Do not worry. Poor weight gain may be due to inadequate hind milk consumption in early infants. Ensure a healthy diet for yourself and take fluids before feeding him. This will ensure good milk secretions. Feed from one breast completely before changing sides to ensure adequate hind milk ingestion. Avoid any stressors. No need for any top feeding as its not at all recommended in first 6 months of life. Feed when he is actually hungry i.e. on demand (except at present as he is sleepy post vaccinations). The intervals vary from 2-4 hours for normal infants.
Also, 1-2 readings should not worry you. Maintain a growth chart and monitor weight, length and head circumference at monthly intervals. This gives a better idea of babies growth rather than 1 reading.
