What Causes False Positive Test Results For Cocaine?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 May 2016
Question: I recently tested positive for cocaine metabolites, but I have never used drugs. Is it possible I received any form of cocaine (anesthetic) when I had a tooth extracted? Would the anesthetic used by the dentist even be kept on file?

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

A false positive for cocaine could be caused by a couple things. First, antibiotics such as amoxicillin or ampicillin, sometimes administered during oral surgery, could do it. So could some topical anesthetics derived from cocaine. But more likely it was a laboratory error. This information legally must be kept on file as part of your medical record. If the dentist doesn't keep a medical record, you have the right to XXXXXXX him.
