What Causes Hearing Sounds In Ears?

default
Posted on Fri, 16 Jan 2015
Question: I have been getting random drumming sounds in my ears(not rhythmic heartbeat), whooshing-almost ocean waves-like sounds in both ears at the same time whenever I blink or close my eyes tightly, there are times that I feel like I am talking under water, they pop and crackle sometimes but not enough to make it feel like I am getting relief of any sort. This has been going on for months and months. I told my doctor, he sent me to get my hearing checked. My hearing was in normal ranges. The audiologist said maybe sinus issues or need tubes in ears. I am 33, have never had ear problems, chronic infections etc. I have had sinus issues and allergies my whole life. I am incredibly frustrated and irritated by these sounds and feelings in my ears but have no idea what to do next.

Brief Answer:
Impedance Audiogram (Typanometry) should be done first.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Since you have experienced the pop and crackle sometimes, Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD) needs to be checked for. A Tympanogram (Impedance Audiogram) should be done.

2. Fluid build-up or negative pressures in the ear are known to cause Tinnitus in spite of normal hearing.

3. ETD occurs because of allergy and sinus issues and you do have a history of these.

4. Upload a Typanogram (Impedance Audiogram). Based on this the next steps can be taken.

If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
